What is Redemption Period?

A domain I want to register is listed as “redemptionPeriod.”   This is  a “grace period” allowing the person who registered it to renew it before losing it.   This is an official central VeriSign registry

While in redemption period, the domain cannot be modified or purged.  The registry info cannot be modified or updated. The registrant can, however, re-claim and renew the domain (for a fee).

Current policies define the redemption period to be thirty calendar days.

After the redemption period, it moves to Pending Delete status which lasts for 5 calendar days.

So, keep watching that domain name. Set a daily reminder in your calendar to check it towards the end of the redemption period.

While some people say you need to pay to grab domain names, I have successfully registred several domain names by watching them move through their status updates and grabbing them the day the pending delete ended.
