When trying to find a domain name for a business, it is important that you pick a good one. Sometimes this is easy, but most times it is not because so many domain names have already been registered. Here are some different approaches. Take your time and find the best one that you can.
Pick a Registrar. First, choose the domain name registrar that you want to work with. A registrar is a company that you use to register your domain to give you ownership of it. I have used several domain name registrars. The one I have moved all my domains to is GoDaddy. They have a good user interface for managing domains and often run specials. The reason you select a registrar first is because you will go to the registrar’s website to conduct your search.
Search. Now, start searching for names. Ideally, you want to register your business with the business name and a dot com extension. This is not only less confusing to others, but gives you a consistent identity on business cards and in other forms of advertising.
Use Relevant Keywords. Often the domain for your business name is already taken. Try adding additional, but related words. For example, if you have an electrical supply business, then try adding on words such as electrical, supply, electrician or power. These are keywords.
Keywords will help you get traffic from search engines. Search engine traffic is free, so you want to , do this. The more specific and related the keywords are to your business, the better you will be. Keywords are also relevant to the web site you will have built, so think this through.
Extensions beyond .com Try extensions other than .com such as .net, .org, .mobi, .info and many, many others. The most desired is dot com and what you should try to get, especially because you are looking for a domain name for your business. People generally will not remember the extension and just put dot com at the end. You will not look as professional if you get a dot net or a dot org address.
Give Yourself Time. Put thought into the name and spend time searching for a good domain name for your business. It is hard to find a name that is not already registered. After days of searching, all ahe names you think of might already be registered, but stick with it. A good idea might come to you. If you are really lucky, a domain that recently dropped (was not renewed and is now available) might turn up.
Be Creative. Use Your Imagination. If you get stuck, asked friends for suggestions. An outsider’s fresh perspective might generate some great ideas. Nameboy Domain Name Generator is a great site for coming up with ideas. I have used it for years.
